A payment gateway binds together all the stakeholders involved in a transaction with a buyer, merchant, buyer’s bank and seller’s bank. This is why it takes a long time for an individual to become fully comfortable in implementing a gateway in a website. A payment gateway integration is crucial for highly successful online transactions. So, we explain here the API calls that usually happen when making a transaction with a payment gateway.

How does a payment gateway integration work

The image above shows the main integration steps.

API Integration Steps

Merchant website

To initiate a transaction, the merchant generates a POST REQUEST (which is a particular mode of interaction on the internet). The request must include mandatory and optional parameters. The mandatory fields include a key (provided by gateway), txn ID (order reference number generated at merchant’s end), amount product info, first name, email, phone, service_provider, and hash (checksum). Merchant also calculates a hash and sends it to the payment gateway.

PayU Payment Gateway’s Website

When the POST request reaches PayU, the customer would be re-directed to payment gateway’s (PayU’s) payment page. The customer now selects the particular payment option on payment gateway’s (PayU’s) page (Credit Card/Debit Card/Net Banking etc) and clicks on ‘Make Payment’. Now, payment gateway re-directs the customer to the chosen bank. The customer goes through the necessary authorization/authentication process at bank’s login page, and the bank gives the success/failure response back to the payment gateway.

  1. When the transaction POST request hits the payment gateway server, a new transaction entry is created in the database. To identify each new transaction in the gateway database, a unique identifier is created every time at gateway’s end.
  2. Our payment gateway marks the transaction status on the basis of response received from Bank.
  3. A final transaction response is sent to the merchant through a POST RESPONSE. In this response, the merchant would receive the final status of the transaction. Merchant will also receive the hash parameter here. This is done to strictly avoid any tampering attempt by the user.

The post An Exclusive Overview Of The Indian Travel Industry appeared first on PayU Blog.

Ladies & gentlemen, please fasten your seat belts as you might experience some factful turbulence ahead!

Travel for us is all parts of human emotion combined, it ties into it a sense of wanderlust, a sense of purpose, fear, excitement and happiness among other emotions. A famous saying beholds, “Blessed are those who travel, as they will have adventures.” Whatever your reason to travel might be, booking for the journey and back and the hotel stays is an experience all of us have gone through. That itself brings a ton of emotions on the surface: nervously keeping track of ticket prices so that you book your tickets well in time, anxiety jitters of last minute bookings and booking in tatkal is a bigger challenge like no other! It is no wonder that the industry built around this whole experience is vibrant, ever changing and always primed for disruption. It is this beauty of the experience that spurs all firms on to revolutionize this experience.

The travel booking industry has come a long way. Remember the days, when local travel agents ruled the roost to to the current day where travelers are spoilt for choice for both price and offerings provided by various websites and apps? They range from travel aggregators which combine flight + hotel bookings from different vendors in one place, to specialized aggregators that only allow travelers to book train, bus or other kind of tickets to standalone websites by individual vendors.

PayU is the largest payment gateway firm in India allowing businesses to collect payments online. This has allowed PayU to have a ringside view as the travel industry has evolved in the past few years. With its deep penetration in the sector, PayU has a wealth of insights into how travelers behave when it comes to booking their travel. Below is an attempt to uncover those insights and unravel how India travels. This covers data across major travel aggregators and the most popular standalone vendor websites. PayU accounts for 70% of the travel transactions processed online in India giving the data a diverse richness and accuracy.

payu travel insights

payu travel insights airline travel

payu travel insights non-airline travel

The trend in both: ‘amount spent on bookings’ and ‘the number of transactions’, increases as the year progresses. Despite all our planning, it is evident that Indians are last minute planners. Travel bookings spike in the last 2 quarters when, the holiday season picks up with a flurry of festivals such as Diwali, Christmas and the New Year. A stark example is August, for both Airline and non-airline merchants, the bookings are higher because of public holidays (Independence Day, etc) and a couple of festivals are just around the corner. People travelling through flights/airlines are more likely to book ticket on an immediate basis (previous or next day). For non-airline travelers, in case of festivals at least this duration increases to 2 days.

What is also interesting to note that the non-airline bookings rises in the last quarter. The last mile connectivity becomes important as, Indians want to be home (during festivities) which have good road and rail connectivity to major metros. The last 2 quarters also represent the season of long weekends and the frosty weather which results in a spike in travel bookings.

It clears that the first quarter which sees no major holiday, marks the exam season for kids and is the closing quarter of the financial year, sees the least number of travel bookings. Further, the number of bookings peaks up in the year’s second quarter with the rise in professional travel bookings (as the new financial year kicks off for firms). So next time you plan that trip with your buddies to Goa in December or with the family during the summer holidays, make sure to book early to avoid the surge in prices that last minute bookings bring along.

Another really interesting trend to look at is, when do Indian travelers freeze travel plans? Is it during the day or the millennials booking travel at night; which is the dominant and emerging trend. Also when in the week do Indian travelers start planning and booking for travel purposes?

payu travel insights best booking timings

Most of the tickets are booked online by travelers during the day time from 9 am to 6 pm. A concentrated peak appears in a 6 hour zone: 9 am to 3 pm

This either indicates that travelers tend to make bookings during the day from offices or a wider trend that the travel agents still act as aggregators to book tickets for customers. The trend seems to persistent for airlines or non-airlines bookings.

So how does this trend play out over the week? The data there also tends to support the hypothesis above:

payu travel insights best booking days

As observed, majority of bookings happen in the middle of the week further minimizing as the weekend dawns.

The deeply entrenched web of credit cards and the wide spread of debit cards

payu travel insights summary

payu travel insights asv non airlines

Some highlighted trends begin blossom once we start looking at the data from how Indian travelers choose to pay:

  • Indians mostly pay using Credit Card (CC). This is not surprising, given the high number of exclusive tie-ups airlines have with card issuers for offering co-branded card. Most CC transactions are incentivized by linking purchases to miles on select airlines. But, it also shows that Indians are not shying away from traveling on credit.
  • Debit Card (DC) transactions offer an interesting mix. Incase of volume processed using debit cards, it actually goes beyond CC usage. Whereas, the number of transactions show a very interesting trend that, Indian travelers shop more for travel with debit cards. They are willing to spend more money on credit card transactions, though transaction volumes are lower there.
  • Net banking is the third highest, but there the number of transactions processed closely mirrors the amount being spent overall.
  • Another trend is the much lower ASV on debit cards compared to credit cards across airlines and non-airlines bookings. This is even lower compared to the average trend in ASV for all transactions.
  • Even across non-airlines bookings, the trend for bookings made via credit cards remains high. Debit card emerges as a winner, indicating that it is not transacting on credit that attracts travelers. The eco-system of rewards introduced by issuing firms around credit cards pushes them to use credit cards way higher than they would do for other kind of bookings.
  • The fact that the ASV for credit cards is the highest even for non-airline bookings (despite low penetration in the segment) indicates travelers se value proposition in credit as a payment option.

payu travel insights airline and non-airline

Another interesting parameter to observe is the best time credit card/debit card/net banking transactions occupy a significant market share.

It is clear that credit cards have a maximum share in the first quarter of the year when it comes to both number of transactions and actual volume spent through the PayU platform. Whereas, the last quarter has the lowest share for credit cards. We had seen earlier that the growth trend is good for no-airlines bookings in the last quarter. This points to the fact that debit card usage is maximum in terms of share of transactions in the last quarter.

This is indicative that,

  • People prefer to reach home by any possible means during festivals and holidays.
  • Lower cost transactions go on the rise increasing the usage of debit cards for non-airline transactions.
  • This trend is also seen in net banking transactions, with transactions peaking in the last quarter of the year (in value terms (Rs.))

So a few points are very clear about Indian payment behavior as far as it comes to traveling. It is interesting to note that the trends bust a lot of myths.

  • Are Indians averse to credit? No, as it seems.
  • Are Indians booking travel themselves? Not really. Maybe the Indian customer needs more education and faith building.
  • Indians follow very conventional habits when it comes to booking tickets during the week and during a day.
  • With new payment instruments such as UPI coming in, it will be interesting to how traveler behavior changes as the days pays by.

Does more convenience in paying widen the net of customers served online? Or does the usage of online aggregators become more democratized? Well, only time can tell as it moves on its steady march, but we will be here looking at the trends as the weeks and months pass by, so stay tuned!

The post Why Refund Takes Time To Reach Your Customers? appeared first on PayU Blog.

]]>
As an online business owner, you are answerable to complex customer questions like, “where are my refunds? why are they taking time? when will I get them back?” and more. Generally, these questions arise from a few typical scenarios, hypothetically listed down below:

Scenario 1: Customer orders food via an app and uses a credit card to pay. After a while, he/she cancels the order.

Scenario 2: Your customer buys ethnic wear online. When the product arrives, he/she realizes the disinterest or misfit in the order and returns it.

Scenario 3: Customer books online movie tickets and makes the payment online itself. He/she receives a transaction successful message but the booking is not complete yet.

Refunds are needed in all three scenarios. Before you hit the “refund” button on your dashboard here’s what you need to know:

  • How do refunds take place?
  • Why they take time?

refund

Today, any successful online business will have a payment gateway integrated with their business. A payment gateway plays the role of a mediator between the customer and the bank. Let’s briefly understand the role of a payment gateway:

payment settlement process for refunds infographic

Image Source: PayUmoney Blog – What is a payment gateway & how it works?

From the infographic, it is clear that payment processing involves multiple entities. Each and every entity is important, as the payment will not be successful in the absence of either of them.

Take a look at the settlement process explained in a very crisp and concise manner in the presentation below:

Why Refunds Take Time?

Just like online payments are processed via a payment gateway, refunds process in the same way as well. All the entities are involved in the refunds scenario. They have their own methods, mechanisms and authentication factor to process online payments. Many of these processes require human assistance and not automation. A slight delay in these processes at any point delays the further process. Which in turn prolongs the refund timeline.

In usual cases, customers receive refunds in their accounts within 5-10 days. However, in some exceptional cases, it might take over 10 days mainly due to technical faults.

How To Process Refunds In Time?

As a business, timely refund processing is not in your hands. Clear and direct communication between all the payment processing entities is the key. For example, the issuing bank fails to update the acquiring bank about the transaction.

Thus, to have the best payment gateway such as PayUmoney integrated with your business is a must! It supports you to carry your business forward smoothly and quickly.

Easy PayUmoney Refund Process

As per sources, in an e-commerce scenario, at least 30% of all products ordered online are returned as compared to 8.89% in physical stores.

Referring to these statistics, processing refunds on PayUmoney dashboard is pretty straightforward. There are 2 refund options available in the new improved and updated PayUmoney dashboard.

  1. Partial refunds: you can refund the desired amount of the total amount
  2. Full refunds: you can refund the full amount

Check out what each status stands for in detail and how to select the apt refund status in the video.

With all your marketing efforts for your business in place, it’s a good idea to have an all-in-one payment solution in place as well. Now to enjoy the best payment gateway experience and grow your business effortlessly!

5. If you are not an existing PayUmoney/PayUnow merchant:

  • Enter your ‘business email ID’ in the provided field

  • Now, enter your ‘Mobile Number’ and ‘Contact Name’. Please note that this name will be used to send payment links to your customers. For example, if you enter ‘Happy Travels Ltd’ as the name then your customers will get a payment link saying ‘Happy Travels Ltd’ has requested Rs. 2000

  • Then, type in the ‘OTP’ which you will receive in the ‘mobile number’ and ’email Id’ you entered. Please note that this number is valid only for 5 minutes

  • Now, you can start using PayU Payments Plugin For MS Excel

Please note that to receive customer payments into your bank account, you need to complete the onboarding process by login into ‘PayUnow Dashboard’ and verify your bank account. Watch this video How To Link Bank Account With PayUnow To Accept Customer Payments In Your Bank Account to know more.

How To Create & Send Payment Links and Track Payment Status

1. After registration, click on ‘PayU Invoice’ button in the top menu bar to find a new clickable button, ‘Create New PayU Invoice’.

2. Just click on that button to get a new workbook with 2 sheets, ‘Add Invoice’ and ‘Invoice Status’ and instructions on how to use.

Please note: Invoice Status is a locked screen and you will not be able to make any changes on this sheet

3. Enter the details of one or more customers. Start with ‘Customer Name’, ‘Customer Email’, ‘Customer Mobile Number’, ‘Product/Service Description’, ‘Amount to be collected’, & ‘Set expiry date’ (for the payment links).

Please note that once you enter all the details, another command button in the menu becomes clickable and that is ‘Send Invoice’.

4. Now, click on ‘Send Invoice’ button and see a status bar showing that the invoices are being sent.

5. Once the invoices are sent completely, you will get a confirmation on the number of invoices you sent.

payu payments plugin for ms excel invoice sent

Please note that as soon as the invoices are sent, the ‘Add Invoices’ sheet becomes empty and all the customer information is captured in the ‘Invoices Status’ sheet.

6. You can view as well as track the status of the payment links right from this ‘Invoice Status’ sheet with no dashboard login. This is possible with the two new clickable buttons, ‘Sync Status’ and ‘Resend Unpaid Invoice’.

7. Click on’Sync Status’ button to get a date filter pop-up. Here, select the date range from which you want an update on the payments details.

Now the selected payment links are refreshed with their payment statuses.

Please note that there are three statuses for payment links, ‘Paid’, ‘Unpaid’, and ‘Unpaid & Expired’. If you get the ‘Unpaid & Expired’ status then you need to create a new payment link.

8. Click ‘Resend Unpaid Invoice’ to resend payment links to customers who have not paid.

Truly, using PayU Plugins is as simple as using an Excel. Starting from creating payment links, sharing the same via Email, SMS or both to tracking payment statuses (Paid, Unpaid, or Expired) – all of this can be done from your Microsoft Excel itself.

Grow your business effortlessly with ‘PayU Payments Plugin For MS Excel’ by simplifying the way you accept payments today!

Change is the only constant! Everything needs a change and when it comes to businesses nothing matters more than enhanced and improved way to keep a tab on every detail (especially the moneys). With the new PayUmoney dashboard you’ll be able to just do that: grow your business with key transaction insights you need to know.

What’s Inside?

In the new PayUmoney dashboard, you can see all your transactions being highlighted as:

  • Amount credited: Black
  • Amount debited (refunds): Red

For better read and convenience, we have divided this blog into two parts for: New users & Existing users.

New PayUmoney Dashboard Updates For Existing Merchants

Transactions Tab

PayUmoney business dashboard now comes with a fine ledger view which enables you to view all your transactions in a systematic form. In the ledger view you can check out:

  • Total Transaction (failed/successful transactions)
  • Amount credited (successful transactions minus transaction fees)
  • Amount debited(refunded + transaction fees)

This classification will help you keep a tab on your business cashflow system – how much is coming in and how much is going out (refund). Also, once you login to PayUmoney dashboard, you can add ‘filters’ to the information that you actually want to see in the ledger view.

Here’s a brief explanation of all the filters that you can choose to view:

a. Date Filter: On the PayUmoney dashboard a default date of 90 days is set automatically. You can customize this date or timeline though.

  • Refund: This filter selects all the refund payments : Refunds in Progress and Refunds Completed.

Do you want a payment checkout that turns your customer’s shopping experience unforgettable? We have a happy news! PayUmoney’s web checkout is out and it is all set to turn your customer’s payment experience simple, fun and easy at the same time! What makes this stand out are its advanced features like re-directionless checkout, easy retry option, payment mode intelligence, and Nitro flow – for safe & automatic access to saved cards without login. All these combined gives you the best success rate!

Read on to find more about PayUmoney web checkout and how it can be integrated into your website!

What Is PayUmoney Web Checkout Payment Gateway?

Let’s start with the basics, PayUmoney web payment gateway is a super fast and completely redirection-less checkout flow. If you are coming across the word ‘re-directionless checkout’ for the first time then it simply means a checkout flow that does not redirect your customers to another payment page. It enables your customers to make payments on the same page itself. This means the payment page will pop up as an overlay on the website itself, preventing redirection. PayUmoney web checkout is that seamless!

Whom Is This Checkout Available For?

It is perfect for online businesses with a website and for those who are looking out for a payment gateway checkout that:

    1. Can be integrated easily with minimum technical effort
    1. Can also be integrated into websites built on e-commerce platforms like WooCommerce, Magento & OpenCart
    1. Gives higher success rate
  1. Is optimized for all devices, be it mobile, tab, laptop etc.

7 Reasons Why You Should Choose PayUmoney Web Checkout

1. Completely Redirection-Less Checkout Experience

[bctt tweet=”Did you know 69% of customers abandon their carts after choosing to buy? ” via=”no”]

This means that 7 out of 10 people will leave your website after clicking on Pay now button. With PayUmoney’s web checkout, your customers never leave your website. It make it easy for your customers to pay online by reducing the number of steps they take to complete their payments.

2. Faster Transactions With Saved Cards

It is loaded with features that speed up your customer’s payment and this, in turn, lowers drop-offs & finally improves the customer conversion. One of the main features that contribute to its speed is Nitro Flow.

    1. Nitro Identifies who your customers are
    1. Automatically logs them in safely
    1. Takes customers directly to their saved cards & wallets
  1. Brings about a faster transaction and higher success rate

Please note: Nitro is only available for cards that require 2-factor authentication (2FA) and not for International cards.

3. Displays Most Used Payment Method First

When a customer is on the payment page and is about to make payment, our in-house algorithm, Payment Mode Intelligence arranges payment options in the order of his/her past usage. So, the payment mode most relevant to the customer is placed first.

Say, for example, your regular customer Rahul prefers using UPI as his payment option. When he returns to your website to purchase a new product, Payment Mode Intelligence arranges UPI as the first payment option based on the frequency of his usage. This makes it very easy for the customer to complete the payment!

4. Retry Payments Seamlessly

According to our internal metrics around 15% transactions fail at the bank or 3D secure page. In that case, consumers will have to restart the entire checkout process.

Even if there is a system or network error, your customers can retry seamlessly and land back on the payment page, with their details filled in.

This is possible with the advanced caching technology that temporarily caches (saves) your customer data so they can re-initiate payment from where they left.

5. Easy & One-time Integration

Choose this for an easy to integrate payment checkout. All you have to do is to add few lines of JavaScript code from your end once and for all! Then, we will take care of the rest of the complexities in the integration. When there is any new update, like an enhancement or a new payment method option, it will get updated automatically on the day it is launched.

6. All Payment Options Supported

Now, your customers can choose to pay from any of their preferred payment option like Credit Cards, Debit Cards, Net Banking, PhonePe Wallet, EMI, LazyPay, UPI & more.

7Available For Plugins

If you have a website built on E-commerce platforms, go for a payment gateway that is easy to integrate with no technical effort required from your end. It is now available for websites built on popular e-commerce platforms like WooCommerce, Magento, and OpenCart & Languages like PHP and ASP.net. We are actively working on rolling out web checkout experience for multiple plugins and platforms. We will keep you updated as and when we roll out the experience on new plugins.
