“It is not an organization department or a function in the company. It is a mindset everyone has to have within a company to strive for the customer getting the value that you promise them. That’s how customer success really works!” – Sameer Goel, Co-founder, Austin Monks 

With these powerful words, we concluded our first show up on Customer Retention 2018. Over time, while hosting UpStart & CodeUp events and interacting with the crowd, we realized that people want more in-depth sessions from our end. Soon, we went on to work on this realization and marked a few important points: 

Businesses (startups or established) have a few essentials parameters to measure successful: 

  • Money 
  • Customers  
  • Sales 

Customers seemed to be the heroes amongst these three essentials as, all businesses need customers to function at their optimal best and thus we freezed the event topic as: Customer Retention. Businesses generally run behind acquiring new customers but falter to retain what they already have. Customer retention talks about this aspect of the customer relationship – ‘retention’.  

Once all the event formalities were completed, we kickstarted the event by first introducing the knowledge enriched speakers.

Isha mentioned that customers come to you because of the treatment they experience. If you go to a doctor and don’t like his behavior, next time you will not go to him. Similarly, if you don’t behave in good, hostile way with your customers your returning customer ratio will drop down. She also emphasized the fact: Happy Employees = Happy Customers. As a business, your co-workers or employees are satisfied, they will your end user or customers will be satisfied with your service.

He mentioned that it is necessary to bring in local flavor to your product and how it can be achieved on a larger scale. Kumar states that it is important to know what you want to optimize and track. He also spoke about to bring your customers coming back to you by figuring out what are possible triggers for your customers. Moving on he emphasizes on creating habits and that it needs to rewarded immediately.

The growth story of Ekbote Logs & Lumbers Pvt. Ltd. stands as an example for many more offline businesses to grow online.

Background

Ekbote Furniture is one of the oldest furniture manufacturing brands in Maharashtra and has showcased impeccable quality, outstanding growth and advanced furniture styles since 1960s. They have retail outlets in Pune, Mumbai, Kolhapur, Bangalore and Chennai.

What made Ekbote go online?

Ekbote Furniture has been a very well established and reputed player in Maharashtra. They have proven quality, leadership in product prices also and command a premium. They fiddled around with e-commerce for six months, but not in a fully invested manner. There were two primary motivators for them to launch their online business to take on competition.

  • The advent, preliminary success and VC interest in online only players like Urban Ladder, Pepperfry and Fab Furnish proved the fact that there is potential for home furnishing as a category to do well. Plus, Ekbote Furniture, being a manufacturer, was higher up the value chain and had the potential to do better monetarily, and this made great economic sense.
  • The foot fall that Ekbote Furniture’s retail outlets used to attract was on a steady decline. Moreover, the reduced foot fall also did not result in conversions due to premium prices

The revamped online strategy

Being an offline business Ekbote had many questions around

  1. How will they get payments?
  2. What happens if a customer ever asks for replacement etc.?
  3. Who will help them with E-commerce technology?

PayU and Shoptimize powered Ekbote’s online store. They were able to start transacting on day 1 with the pre-integrated PayU payment gateway with Shoptimize.

Shoptimize created a state of the art e-commerce website in terms of design and functionality to take the online only start-ups head on.

Growth plans ahead

Ekbote’s online foray has worked well to inspire them to reduce focus on the offline channel & host exclusive products for the online channel with competitive prices. They currently spend well on online and offline marketing and plan to continue that in the future. Initial results have confirmed the fact that the revamped online strategy was right on target.
