GST is finally here with the special midnight session in the central Hall of Parliament. This is one of the landmark tax reforms since independence. From July 1st, the nation is on its way to achieving the goal of One Nation – One Tax with the replacement of bunch of central and state taxes. With Government promoting digital India in full swing, a payment gateway plays a great role in this reform. Here’s a blog demystifying Goods and Services Tax for your business

Tax changes?

Previously, dealers registered under VAT were issued a TIN number & service providers were given a service tax registration number by the Central Board of Excise and Custom (CBEC). From July 1st, a single platform called GSTN has been introduced to provide IT infrastructure for all those under the compliance. Here, the Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) will be used to collect or pay taxes. It is a 15 digit PAN based number with State code & business vertical details as shown below:

gstin

At PayUmoney payment gateway, we are helping merchants comply with GST laws & transition to the GSTIN network by completing easy steps shown here with a dummy account:

Login to PayUmoney seller Dashboard:
Head over to the ‘Account Details’ section on the left:

Move to ‘GST Details’ section:

Click on ‘Add your GST Number’:

Enter Correct 15 digit GSTIN & Operating Address details and Click on Submit.

Service Tax changes?

In the era from July 1st 00.00.00 Hours, the Service Tax will be levied at 18% instead of the 15% on all transactions. This is in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Government of India and the GST council.

To comply with the GST laws, it is imperative that you update your GSTIN on our dashboard asap. Login to our payment gateway dashboard now!

Do you sell online? Have questions about GST and its impact on your online business? Here’s a blog simplifying Goods and Services Tax for you:

What is GST?

GST is the single biggest tax reform in India aimed at replacing all indirect taxes like sales tax, service tax, VAT, customs duty, central sales tax, entertainment tax, luxury tax etc. GST is “one indirect tax” on the supply of goods and services, right from manufacturers to the end consumer for the entire country, which will make India one unified common market. In the current scenario, indirect tax is highly complex due to the multiplicity of taxes, compliances issues obligations, tax overlaps.

What will be the impact of GST on e-commerce business?

Let’s first understand what Electronic Commerce & Electronic Commerce Operator means under the ambit of GST: “Electronic commerce” is the supply of goods or services or both of them. This includes digital products sold over digital or electronic network; { as under Sec.2 (44) of CGST Act}

An “Electronic commerce operator” is any person who owns, operates or manages the digital or electronic facility or platform for electronic commerce. { as under Sec.2 (45) of CGST Act}. Also, a person providing information or any other services incidental to or in connection with such supply of goods & services through electronic platform will be considered as an Operator.

Here are few real-life examples to explain how different sellers in the online world will be affected by GST:

1. Direct Supply from Seller to Customer: –
Sellers who have their own website for their business and do not rely on other online aggregators for the listing of goods. In this case, Central GST (CGST)/State GST (SGST) shall be charged by a seller in case of an intrastate transaction and IGST in case of an interstate transaction.

Eg: Rahul orders a book from bookshop.com. The online website shall be maintained by the seller – Bookshop & the invoice of the book has to be generated by Bookshop and shall levy GST on the product sold.

2. Supply from Seller to Customer via online Aggregators/Intermediary: –
Products of sellers are listed on websites of aggregators. These orders are in turn given to the Seller for delivery of the goods. Here, the seller has to make the invoice & deliver the same to the customer directly. The invoice shall contain the name of the company/firm, Reg. Address, TIN/CST no. etc.

Example: Mr. Rohan orders the latest mobile from the Online aggregator. The aggregator will now book an order on behalf of the Seller named XYZ Retailer. So, the aggregator will ask XYZ Retailer to deliver goods to the customer. Here, the seller XYZ shall levy GST on the goods. The aggregator shall generate an invoice and charge GST according to the services given to the seller like Courier, Shipping charges, Booking, Commission etc in the name of the seller. Invoice to be charged can vary according to T&C contained in MOU with sellers. Eg – If goods are delivered by e-commerce platform to the customer then shipping charges shall be charged by platform in the bill.

3. Sellers to Online Portal to Customers: –
Here, online portals buy goods from sellers and then these portals sell to final customer i.e. the inventory has to be bought by the portal. Role of e-commerce site shall not be limited to provide interface but also to become the owner of the goods.

For example, Mr. Sourabh orders portable speaker from the Online Website ABC, this site will book order & purchase the goods from Shashi Electronics to deliver the goods to Customers. The invoice of the said speaker will now be created by Shashi Electronics including TIN No. and addressed to the Website – ABC. Now, ABC will issue an invoice to Customer.

Who needs to be GST compliant?

The following type of businesses need to register:

 • Any business crossing the threshold limit
 • Existing businesses registered with the central (Excise / Service Tax) or state (VAT) authorities
 • Taxable person carrying on an interstate supply
 • Businesses liable under reverse charge in GST ambit
 • Businesses wanting to collect GST or claim input (despite being below threshold) can take voluntary registration

How to become compliant?

Registration process for a new seller
A seller has to fill in registration application in less than 30 days of crossing the prescribed threshold / starting of a business. Here, the date of application would be considered the effective date of registration for obtaining Input Tax Credit (ITC).

Registration Process for an existing sellers
All sellers registered with central or state tax authorities would be migrated to GST by default and allotted Goods and Service Tax Identification Number (GSTIN). Sellers falling below the threshold may continue to be registered and get benefits of GST credit chain or opt out themselves.

GSTIN:

It is a 15 digit PAN based number with state code & business vertical details as shown below:

gstin

State Code: To be based on India census 2011. Ex: 27 for Maharashtra and 29 for Karnataka
Entity Code: Alphanumeric 1 to 9 and A to Z based on number of business verticals in a state for the same PAN (i.e 9 digits plus 26 characters, a total of 35 business verticals per state is possible)

Online businesses are using technology to solve their business problems. If complex technical integration is a pain point & reason for your reluctance, then we have a good news for you! With the help of technology, PayUmoney is simplifying payments for both tech and non tech savvy merchants.

Recently, we made the checkout flow easier and faster. In this blog, let’s have a look at why merchants are using Invoicing solution to create bill templates & collect payments from customers, track the status of the invoices with ease. You’d want to know more about the invoicing solution, if you:

 • Want to create and send email and sms invoices within minutes if not in seconds
 • Don’t have tech team to integrate gateway
 • Want to collect upon delivery
 • Address the issue of abandoned cart
 • Collect payment from customer for specific product(s), without having them browse your website
 • Set Expiry time for the invoices you share

Recently, we added some more features to the existing invoicing system, let’s have a look here:

Reusable link

You can now broadcast invoices via links using the Copy link feature. Here, you can use a single link to receive payment from multiple customers. This saves you from the hassle of creating separate link for each customer! This means that you can share the links along with your social media post or marketing campaigns. Here, you also give your customers the option to complete the purchase with the help of the payment link.

Customize link

You can now send customized links using one or more of the below parameters:

 • Invoice number & Customer name – For merchants having their own billing system, the corresponding identifier for the bill can be passed for reconciliation
 • Tax & Shipping charges – For merchants whose products and services has provision for tax and shipping charge, the total amount can be broken up and shown

Steps to create Email/SMS Invoice

Login to your PayUmoney dashboard, go to Payment Links

Click on Send Payment Links and Fill up Email/Number, Amount, Description, Expiry date and time

Click on Send button

Message after sending the invoice successfully

You can use the Copy link feature (‘Send to’ field is optional) to share on Social channels:

How about an online payment flow for your customers without requiring them to Login multiple times? Even better: How about letting them fetch their Saved Cards & Wallet balance without Logging into their account?

Introducing the Nitro checkout which reduces the number of steps required to complete the purchase for your customers, thereby lowering drop-offs and improving conversions for you! Our internal metrics show that when customers see Saved Cards or have multiple options like Wallet at the online payment page, the success rate improves by as much as 15%. With Nitro flow you get:

 • Fewer steps, faster transactions
 • Lower drop-offs, better success rates

Here is how the Nitro flow works:

For first time customers on your website who already have a user account on PayUmoney:

 1. Customer fills up cart & billing information on your page, clicks on ‘Pay’ button
 2. They get redirected to the PayUmoney payment gateway page. They’ll see their Saved Cards and Wallet balance associated with the Mobile number & Email Id entered

For returning customers on:

 1. Customer fills up cart & billing information on your page, clicks on ‘Pay’ button
 2. They get redirected to the PayUmoney gateway page. They’ll see their Cards and Wallet balance associated with the Mobile number & Email Id entered

For customers who do not have PayUmoney account or enter new Email ID & Mobile number

 1. Customer fills up cart & billing information on your page, clicks on ‘Pay’ button
 2. They can either create a new account on PayUmoney or do a Guest checkout

Why should you integrate Nitro?

Our internal metrics show that user drop increases with the increase in a number of steps. Moreover, your customers have multiple things to remember like anniversaries, spouse’s birthday, IT return dates and more. It is likely that they will not remember their login details asked on the checkout page and chances of them dropping off here is alarmingly high.

With the Nitro flow, your customers are required to enter only the Mobile number and Email ID. Their Saved Cards and Wallet will be populated on the PayUmoney payment page where they just have to enter the CVV & OTP incase of cards and OTP in case of wallets. Thus their effort to complete the purchase is reduced significantly. Here, we take care of security with PCI DSS compliance, tokenization and other security measures to ensure that the sensitive card information is stored with maximum possible security.

How to integrate this?

You can get Nitro Checkout without requiring to write a single line of code. We are enabling Nitro in a phased manner for our merchants. You can also write to us at merchantcare@payumoney.com. Once you request us to enable Nitro flow, we will add you to the list and roll it out for you as quickly as we can.

Going Online or rather owning an online business, gives a plethora of opportunities to merchants like you. You can reach a wider base of customers, respond quickly to their queries and showcase your products in a cost effective manner. On the flip side though, online businesses are more vulnerable to frauds and cyber threats. Payments being a critical stage in the online selling process, you need to provide a secure environment in this stage. There are some steps that you need to take while for some steps you need to depend on your payment gateway:

1. What You Can Do?

Secured Server Layer (SSL)

Is your website secure? Have you encrypted information on your website using the SSL protocol? If not, then it is the first thing you need to do right now. The SSL protocol is the basic element that online business can use to protect their customers. It ensures that the credit card details and other sensitive data sharing between your website and external parties remains confidential. Having a SSL certificate on your website shows that it is protected and builds credibility with customers. The SSL is represented by a padlock icon in the URL bar and the web address begins with https.

Keep Your Platforms Up-To-Date

Whether your platform was built from scratch by developers or based on a third part platform, keep in sync with its latest updates. CMS like WordPress work round the clock to plug security gaps and release regular patches and updates that make their systems less vulnerable. So with the newest versions of your platform, you minimize the risks of getting hacked. To enhance your platform’s security, install third party security plugins.

2. What your gateway needs to do?

Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards Compliance

The PCI DSS is a set of guidelines defined by card schemes like MasterCard, VISA, Maestro, Discover, JCB and American Express. It tells processors how to secure sensitive data during online transaction and broadly covers How to:

 • Build and maintain a secure network
 • Protect cardholder data
 • Maintain vulnerability management program
 • Implement foolproof access control measures
 • Maintain information security policy
 • Monitor and test networks

PCI compliance applies to all entities processing payments online. As a merchant, you don’t have to worry about the security on your portal and the hassles involved in PCI compliance. If you choose the right payment gateway i.e. the one with PCI compliance, you can leave it up to them to comply with the industry level security standards. Choosing a PCI compliant partner essentially means that you are building a safe environment on your website instilling a sense of trust in your customers. Greatest trust leads to higher conversion rates & better customer retention!

Data encryption and Fraud prevention

Online transactions involve sensitive data transfer between multiple entities. Keeping the data safe is the starting point. Card tokenization, OAuth, Fraud prevention solution are some of the key points payment gateways serious about security have a key focus on. Tokenization is the technology used to ensure that your customer’s sensitive card information remains safe. Card details is passed in the form of ‘token’ which is a random string of characters thus replacing & safeguarding the sensitive information. Fraud prevention solution works 24*7 to keep you safe from fraudulent. Velocity checks like volume and value of transactions, Card issuing country, IP location, pattern detection and real time blocking capability helps payment gateways to save you and your customers from fraud transactions.

Online payments can be made relatively secure but there is always a chance of something going wrong. Using the right partner which gives emphasis to security can definitely reduce the overall level of vulnerability on your website. It is therefore essential that you take all the necessary steps and choose the right payment partner to protect you and your customers’ data being compromised.

]]>
Selecting a payment gateway can be made really easy. Don’t believe us? This blog on How to Select the Best Payment Gateway explains the steps to consider while looking for a payment solution. Although your online payments partner makes its presence felt towards the end of the purchase but it the most critical parameter determining the actual sales on your website. Imagine a case where your customer wants to buy your product but you are not able to process that payment thus resulting in a loss of sale. Hence, it is imperative that you choose the right payment partner as it makes life easy for you and your customers. Here are things to improve in your existing payment process:

Payment flow

No customer wants to go through a long payment process. In online shopping, cart abandonment rates increase with the increase in the number of steps for completing the purchase.

The solution – Redirection or Embedded payment flow? A redirect flow moves your customers away from your store. Here, the experience on the third party payment page may be different than that of your portal. However, for businesses in the initial stages, this can also be a sign of trust as the gateway (CitrusPay/PayU) is better known. In an Embedded flow i.e. payment on your portal itself, you control the look and feel of the payment page so that it mirrors the experience of your portal. Mind you that Embedded form requires dedicated developer effort.

Trust & Security

Building trust with your customers takes a lot of time, be it offline or online. However, in the online world, phishing, data leaking & hacking and others cyber attacks make it difficult for you to build and retain the trust factor with your customers.

The solution – Choose a trusted payment gateway. Check if it complies with the latest security standards (PCI DSS) Display trust marks and security logos in the payment checkout pages in order to inculcate a sense of trust in your customers. Ensure familiar logos like Visa, MasterCard, American Express/other premium cards or any local cards/payment methods are displayed on the checkout pages.

Limited Payment Options

Are you accepting payments only via a particular payment instrument say net banking or a particular mobile wallet? If your site lacks payment options for your shoppers to choose from, chances are high that they will not bother coming back to complete their orders.

The solution – Online buyers like to have multiple options and the same is true when it comes to making payments. Having multiple payments option is a hygiene factor. In order to cater to a larger customer base, enable multiple wallets, premium credit cards, maximum number of net banking options. This also helps in-case of payment failures on a particular payment instrument as the customer can now pay via other options available.

Fixed or Variable amount

Is the amount displayed on your portal fixed or does the customer have to fill in the amount? Are you catering to international customers?

The solution – Having a fixed amount can help in avoiding manual errors from your customers when they enter the amount. Also, avoid unclear pricing or hidden costs when accepting international payments. Look at providing payment options in the customer’s local currency or let them choose their currency from a list. Shoppers from other countries shouldn’t have to calculate how much they will pay and what the exchange rate is.

It is essential that you make the right choices, both in terms of choosing the right payment gateway and how it presents the payment options on your portal. Consider the above points to calm your customers’ nerves and create a great payment experience right till the end at the final “order confirmation” page.

Now that your business has grown exponentially or you have newer markets to target e.g. taking your business globally, you might have to move from the existing gateway as it no longer fulfills your business needs. Here are a few important points to help you in your decision while changing your payment partner.

Platform

Have you set up your store on a third party platform or a Content Management System? First things first, evaluate whether the new solution provider is compatible with the platform that your online business is set up on. You wouldn’t want to put in efforts, only to find out later that the new solution provider won’t work on your platform.

Development time

Development efforts and time are the most important parameters that often decide the course of action when integrating a new payment gateway. Make sure your developer and IT team is in sync with the integration decisions because ultimately there the ones responsible for the timely completion of the technological integration. Good payment partners will have the developer guides and integration documentation for you to access while integrating.

Gain v/s Loss?

While switching to a new payment integration it is more likely that it will have better tech, higher conversion and a better user interface. But it is important that you don’t get carried away by this. Keep in mind to review all the payment options supported by the potential payment gateway, it may happen that it doesn’t support an instrument say wallet or premium credit cards. Consider the impact of any addition/removal of any payment option on your customers.

Pricing v/s better conversions

Check if the increase in fees/pricing will have any positive impact on your business. You may want to shell out extra if you are getting higher conversions, more payment mode, more reliable and robust systems, higher up-times and better experience for your customers. Having said this, do some calculation so that it doesn’t affect your profit margin before switching over to a new payment partner.

Listen to your customers

Customer like the freedom to choose how they pay. Depending on your use case and customer preferences give flexibility in terms of payment options for your customers. For example, if you’re selling internationally, you will want to give your customers option to pay in their local currency.

Like most merchants, you may be apprehensive when changing your payment gateway. Ensure that you consider the above important things to help calm your nerves. The right payment partner will not only help you with your current but also future needs so that you don’t have to change payment integration multiple times.
